Bill in US Senate to cap H1B visas

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6: An amendment seeking to bar American companies, which receive Federal bailout money, from hiring H-1B visa holders has been introduced in the US Senate. The amendment to the US economic stimulus bill has been co-sponsored by the Iowa Senator, Mr Chuck Grassley and Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont. Indian IT professionals, who have been the major beneficiaries of the American H-1B visa programme, could be adversely impacted if the amendment gets the Senate nod. "Companies going through layoffs that employ (H-1B visa-holding workers) have a moral obligation to protect American workers by putting them first during these difficult times," Mr Sanders told the Senate. Under the amendment, there would be a suspension of H-1B programme of any institution, receiving bailout funds, for one year. n PTI
